The rich offering of events at the assembly is intended to maximize sharing among participants – to deepen their experience of fellowship, to increase their knowledge of the ecumenical movement and to provide space for dialogue on important issues.
The programme is rooted in theme “God of life, lead us to justice and peace” and engages participants in a response to this prayer. It covers five dimensions of being the church together in the world today – koinonia (one faith and fellowship in Christ), martyria (witness in the world), diakonia (serving justice and peace), ecumenical formation (for leadership) and inter-religious cooperation (a common context).
The assembly programme will provide space for the following elements:
Prayer will mark the beginning and end of each day. It provides the opportunity to be united in faith, to share liturgical gifts and to ground the assembly in the theme, “God of life lead us to justice and peace”.
Daily Bible study in small home groups will focus on moments in biblical history where life was threatened, yet justice and peace prevailed, through God’s grace.
Thematic plenaries are large scale events presenting global challenges the churches must face together. They will highlight how churches and ecumenical partners are working together to address these challenges.
A special madang programme will promote the exchange of gifts and experiences among participants through workshops, exhibitions and side events.
Though there is a strong focus on celebration, dialogue and action; a great deal of business must be completed by the member church delegates and official ecumenical partner representatives. This includes changes in governance, elections and receiving reports as well as processing the work of assembly committees.
In the two days prior to the assembly there will be a variety of pre-assembly events intended to build community and prepare participants. There will be pre-assembly gatherings of women and men, , Indigenous People and the Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network (EDAN).
