In the Karamoja Pastoralist Communities, government has conducted a successful disarmament programme. Young men however who originally were the warriors have not been satisfactorily given space for alternative livelihoods. The women in the community have taken responsibility to lobby government for their understanding of the Peace commitments that have been made by regional governments, lobby for their effective implementation and monitor how the youths are being rehabilitated. This is because without alternative livelihoods for their sons or husbands they realise there is increased sexual and domestic violence. This workshop will show how simple rural women are empowered to take on not just local leadership but regional governments and demand the right to participate in promoting Peace and Security in communities.
